Acting sustainably in our day to day lives has never been more important. The impact of climate change has never been more clear and the evidence for it is irrefutable. As a consequence of this, consumers and businesses alike have started to up their game when it comes to sustainable practises.
Why has sustainability become so important?
Whilst we all know that we should be doing more to protect the environment, it's hard to make changes when you don't have time. Yet just as large changes are vital to combat this issue, small changes are also extremely important in the hope of combating climate change and preserving the state of the natural environment for future generations.
From ensuring that you are recycling properly to spending an hour or two in your community litter picking, there are different ways in which you can contribute to the improvement of the planet without completely overhauling the way in which you live. But one of these ways which has gained great traction is sustainable clothing - particularly sustainable sportswear.
What allows a sustainable business to be labelled as such?
Such items of clothing are classified as sustainable for several reasons. Firstly, they are made out of products that are sourced sustainably. From bamboo to hemp, there have been lots of innovations in the last few years as to how natural products can be used to replace non-sustainable materials such as polyester.
Cotton has been a long-standing example of this, but in order to be sustainable, we cannot be reliant upon one thing. Innovations have allowed these alternative plants to be made into something that doesn’t just act as a replacement material but are also comfortable and durable too.
This brings us to our next point. We live in a throwaway society. Whether that’s food, clothes or both, the public is wasting plenty of good products. Not only is this a waste of the resources that it took to make the product but it also ends up in landfills where toxic fumes and chemicals are emitted into the environment. Ethical gym wear UK businesses should also make highly durable products that their consumers can wear for years to come thus reducing the amount of clothing being thrown away.
Another way in which a company should be ethical is by manufacturing its clothes and other items in a way that treats its employees fairly. Sweatshops are used by several high-end retailers and are known for the appalling conditions within which their employees have to work. People young and old and those that are ill are all overworked. On top of this, they get paid extremely low wages. To overcome this, sustainable businesses source their garment employees in a fair way and ensure that they are paid minimum wage.
Whilst ethical fashion is all the rage these days, it can be hard to find a company that actually lives up to its claims and may feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Most brands don't live up to their promises and use unethical manufacturing processes in other parts of their business. Just because they make a few items or a few product lines in a sustainable way, if the rest of their business plan doesn’t act in an environmentally friendly way too, then they themselves cannot claim to be sustainable.
A true ethical activewear company will know what's important when it comes to producing sustainable activewear products. Their team of designers should be committed to creating fashionable pieces with integrity and ensure that their commitment towards sustainability is exercised in all areas of the business. They should work with factories that have met certain standards for ethical production practises and environmental impact assessments as well.
Another useful practice that some of these companies implement is listing the materials used to create each item on its product page online and stating where each has been sourced from. This way, their customers will always know exactly what went into making this item of clothing.
Such transparency will ensure that these companies are made accountable for their production methods. To summarise, a true environmentally-friendly company will produce high-quality clothing from sustainable materials that are made in an environmentally friendly manner with high levels of transparency.
